January 12, 2007 It's been about 6 months since my last rant, so I thought I'd type up some more thoughts. We had a long and tough 6 week search and rescue for a downed aircraft in late August and the first 3 weeks of September. It was very taxing on the entire squadron, but it did help us in many ways -- we got in our flying hours that we were short on as a Wing, we got much-needed real-world experience and found many bugs in our planning and follow-through, and it helped us grow as a Wing. We weren't able to find the missing pilot, but when he was found it did show that our techniques worked by the very fact that we DIDN'T find him. I had an interesting experience flying the mission and had to make my first emergency landing. That really got my heart racing! We have given squadron pilots free proficiency flying when we had funding (most of which came from Microsoft's donations as I'm an employee). And we have had two SAREX's paid for by our squadron at a time when our Wing funding has dwindled. It's a bit cold for flying today (-14F, or -38F with wind chill), but hope that it warms up soon so we can get back to flying! Thanks for being a great group to work with, and I'm hoping that we can continue this long into the future!
Thanks!
